India’s Policy towards Central Asia: Navigating the External Challenges

The CAS are keen to maintain their ‘strategic autonomy’amidst the intense geo-politics of the region. Further, local discontent with the Chinese engagement and the fear of debt trap makes the CAS more eager to look for alternate partners. Increasing Russia-China partnership is inevitable in the present global situation. India’s interest in the present geo-political landscape of Central Asia would be met by synergising with stakeholder like the EU in areas of common interests like regional security, connectivity projects and sustainable development. Also, India needs to keep open the avenues of cooperation with Russia in Central Asia. India-Russia cooperation in Central Asia holds immense potential; however, the present war in Ukraine poses a few challenges to the partnership in the region.
