PPF organised a two-days’ National Workshop on Earthquake Preparedness in India in association with Vivekanand International Foundation (VIF) at the VIF premises in New Delhi on October 25 & 26, 2018. Shri Hardeep Puri, MoS, MoHUA delivered a Special Address during the Workshop.

The objective of this Workshop was to have in-depth discussions with professionals, experts and academicians in this field on key issues like vulnerability, mitigation measures, preparedness, response mechanism etc aimed at identifying the gaps and appropriate recommendations towards earthquake risk reduction.  The issues covered during this Workshop included Earthquake Risk Reduction, Improving Earthquake Safety of Built Environment, Capacity Building for Earthquake Disaster Mitigation & Preparedness, Earthquake Response Capabilities and gaps and Public Private Partnership in this field.

Shri Hardeep Puri, MoS, MoHUA delivered a Special Address during the Workshop. In his address Shri Puri highlighted the problem of unplanned urbanisation in India and suggested a Multi-disciplinary, Multi-sectoral technology driven approach in the field of Disaster management aimed at ensuring risk reduction.

The Chairs and Panelists in this Workshop included experts, technocrats and professionals from Ministry of Earth Sciences, NDMA, NIDM, NDRF, IITs Delhi, Mumbai & Jodhpur, JNU and International experts etc in this field. The Workshop was very well attended on both days with a cross section of people from various walks of life including govt officials, technocrats, academicians, representatives from private sector, civil engineering students from colleges and school students besides other stakeholders.

The recommendations in this Workshop, inter alia, included need of a comprehensive National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Project (NERMP) for capacity Building of engineers, architects and masons etc., creating a large pool of surveyors and technocrats for Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) of existing buildings and retrofitting of fragile buildings respectively in vulnerable areas, integrating Armed Forces, Civil Defence, Fire & Emergency Services, Indian Red Cross, NGOs and Civil Society etc in disaster management framework, including private sector particularly UNISDR ARISE FICCI India Chapter in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)  activities, including DRR within the ambit of CSR by the Ministry for Corporate Affairs, addressing the subject of livelihood of rural population and resilient villages by including the issue of management of animals in disasters in the DM Act 2005, addressing the issue of mass casualty management in major disasters and introducing the PPP model for risk investment funding
